Last modified: March 18, 2026

Offering discounts and coupon codes is a simple way to encourage purchases, reward loyal customers, and run promotional campaigns in your WooCommerce store. WooCommerce includes a built-in coupon management system that allows you to create different types of discounts, set expiration dates, and control how coupons are used.

This guide explains how to create and configure coupon codes directly from your WordPress dashboard.

For PC

For Mobile

Step 1: Log in to Your WordPress Dashboard

Begin by accessing your website’s admin panel.

  1. Open your browser and go to your WordPress login page.
    Example: yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Click Log In.

After logging in, you will be taken to the WordPress dashboard where you can manage your store settings.

Step 2: Navigate to the Coupons Section

Next, locate the coupon management page in WooCommerce.

  1. On the left-hand side panel, find Marketing.
  2. Click Marketing.
  3. Select Coupons from the submenu.
  4. Click Add Coupon.

This opens the coupon creation page where you can define the discount settings.

Step 3: Enter Coupon Details

Enter the Coupon Code

At the top of the page, you will see the Coupon Code field.

  1. Enter the code customers will use during checkout.
    Examples:

    • SUMMER10
    • WELCOME20
    • SAVE5

Customers will enter this code in the coupon field at checkout to receive the discount.

Add a Coupon Description

Below the coupon code field, add a description.

The description is optional but useful for internal reference. It helps store administrators understand the purpose of the coupon.

Example descriptions:

  • 10% discount for summer promotion
  • Welcome discount for new customers
  • Black Friday special offer

Configure Coupon Data

Scroll down to the Coupon Data section. This is where you define the type of discount and other settings.

Discount Type:

WooCommerce provides several discount types:

Percentage Discount
Applies a percentage reduction to the cart or product price.

Example:
10% off an order.

Fixed Cart Discount
Applies a fixed discount to the entire cart.

Example:
$10 off the total cart value.

Fixed Product Discount
Applies a fixed discount to specific products.

Example:
$5 off a particular item.

Select the discount type that best fits your promotion.

Coupon Amount

Enter the discount value.

Examples:

  • 10 for a 10% discount
  • 20 for a $20 cart discount
  • 5 for a $5 product discount

The meaning of the number depends on the discount type you selected.

Expiry Date

You can set a date when the coupon will automatically expire.

  1. Locate the Coupon Expiry Date field.
  2. Choose a date from the calendar.

Once the expiration date passes, the coupon will no longer work.

Optional Coupon Settings

WooCommerce also provides additional settings that allow you to control how coupons are used.

Usage Restrictions

You can limit coupons based on conditions such as:

  • Minimum or maximum order amount
  • Specific products
  • Product categories
  • Customer email addresses

This helps ensure the coupon is applied only to eligible purchases.

Usage Limits

Usage limits allow you to control how often a coupon can be used.

Examples include:

  • Limit the total number of times the coupon can be used.
  • Restrict usage to one per customer.

This is useful for promotions like first-time buyer discounts.

Step 4: Publish the Coupon

After configuring all settings:

  1. Review the coupon details.
  2. Click Publish.

The coupon will now be active, and customers can use it during checkout.

How Customers Apply a Coupon

When customers reach the checkout page:

  1. They enter the coupon code in the Coupon field.
  2. Click Apply Coupon.
  3. The discount will automatically be applied to the order total.

Well-planned coupon campaigns can increase conversions and encourage repeat purchases.
